The Burmese Market - ตลาดโรงไม้ไทยยูเนี่ยน

It's a Sunday afternoon in the outskirts of Bangkok, and many Bangkokians are hurrying home from weekend trips in the tropical south. Setthakij 1 Road is filled with colorful buses with open windows, and the sound of thundering karaoke fills the air. In the midst of this lively scene, a simple concrete bridge stands out. To the untrained eye, it may appear like an average overpass, but it holds much more significance.

The majority of the area's inhabitants are Burmese, and their population has been steadily increasing due to ongoing conflicts in Myanmar, particularly since the coup in 2021. Myanmar has seemingly been forgotten by the rest of the world, and the clashes between the military junta and various rebel groups continue unabated. As a result, many Burmese people have fled to neighboring Thailand, with an estimated population of roughly 3 million, although the exact number is challenging to determine due to many residing illegally.

Mueang Samut Sakhon is primarily known for its numerous factories, and one of the major players is the Thai Union Group, specializing in canned seafood. The factories are situated on both sides of Setthakij 1 Road, prompting the decision to construct a bridge to enable workers to safely and swiftly cross the busy highway. Additionally, the bridge is conveniently located next to the main market in the area, offering various Burmese specialties, from textiles, imported delicacies, and the opportunity to visit the local fortune teller.

Over time, the bridge has become the heart of the local Burmese community. Since the majority of people work six days a week, Sundays hold a special vibe, and the bridge plays a crucial role in their social lives. It serves as a gathering place for loved ones, families, and friends. Additionally, its a place for reconnecting with their relatives back home through their phones. The shining lights of smartphones resemble lanterns, creating an atmosphere of hope and reassurance—a brief respite in these otherwise uncertain times.
