Prem Pree Hotel - โรงแรมเปรมปรีย์

The proud hotel opened its heavy wooden teak doors in 1952. It was originally started by five friends who grew up together in the Pom Prap Sattru Phai district. Unfortunately, none of their grandchildren were interested in taking over the hotel, so it was a big relief when Mr. Mai stepped in 10 years ago. He grew up watching the hotel being built and has always dreamed of being part of it. Therefore, he was beyond proud when he was handed the keys. The renovation of the rooms has now started one by one, with respect for the original unique design found throughout the hotel. The biggest plan is to install solar panels on the roof so the hotel can be self-sufficient with green energy.

Mai's biggest passion is sports, from cycling to running. He has participated in more than 21 marathons around Thailand, mainly to qualify for one single event, the Boston Marathon—an event that was his biggest dream for years. Yet, when the destined day arrived in 2013, his friend, a crucial companion in this journey, withdrew at the final moment. Consequently, Mai chose to shatter his dream by canceling the entire trip. The news of the Boston Marathon bombing later reached him, leaving him in a state of profound shock and disbelief.

The main group of visitors is mainly related to the old neighboring central train station, Hua Lamphong, so the announced closure is causing concerns. He once had a large group of Vietnamese monks visiting for a week, but he was slightly surprised when he later met them in regular outfits, out exploring the hectic nightlife of Bangkok. Later, he had a Chinese businessman staying, but unfortunately, his financial investment adventure crumpled, and he was therefore unable to pay his bills. Mai was in a dilemma but decided to let him stay until he had enough money to buy a return ticket to Shanghai.

“Running a hotel isn't easy. You deal with all sorts of characters—some party too much, others won't pay, and a few might even try to steal stuff. It's a bit of a human experiment that includes both positive and negative sides.”
