Thewet Banana Leaves - ร้านใบตองเทเวศน์
A green revolution is underway in the heart of the old Thewet market. Vichai may be ahead of his time in combating Thailand's growing plastic problem, but he does so at his own unhurried pace. Despite his daughter's repeated attempts to convince him, he steadfastly refuses to let modern packaging take over. The shop is easily recognizable in the bustling surroundings, thanks to its color-coded walls, floors, desk, and the large piles of banana leaves, creating a consistent green and organic vibe that sets it apart from the rest of the market.
Vichai was born into market life, starting his career in the large wholesale market Mahanak, located further up the canal Khlong Phadung Krung Kasem. He later began cutting banana leaves at Thewet market when he was around 10 years old and has been part of the shop ever since, fostering a close bond with the owners, who became like a second family. When the owners decided to retire and since their children didn't want to continue the business, Vichai took over and has been managing the shop ever since.
With decades of experience, Vichai has evolved into a banana leaf connoisseur, specializing in various types of banana leaves like "Gluay Nam Wa" and "Gluay Tanee," both used for different purposes, but mainly for storing food. Apart from banana leaves, he also sells bamboo baskets and thin bamboo strips. Over the years, climate changes have begun to impact banana leaf prices, with fluctuations occurring, especially due to the large floods during the monsoon season.
The shop is open every day, only closing on a handful of occasions, such as during Songkran. However, Vichai doesn't take holidays. The last time he went on a trip was when he was around 20. The shop means everything to him, and retirement is completely out of the question.
